Chances are you'll have heard of salicylic acid, the hero skincare ingredient that's found in moisturisers, serums and cleansers.
A common BHA (beta-hydroxy acid), the ingredient works to target the appearance of blemishes, while also reducing sebum production and excess oil, which can clog pores and contribute to blackheads, whiteheads and acne.
The reason alicylic acid is such a powerhouse is that it boasts antimicrobial benefits, which kills the bacteria causing the spots, and ensures you are targeting the cause of acne, and other skin concerns, topically as well as deep within the pores.

Salicylic acid not only works to promote a healthy, clear, and pimple-free complexion, but it can also target acne scarring, as well as reduce redness and inflammation, and soothe your skin.
In short, salicylic acid is a key ingredient for a flawless and clear complexion, which is suitable to use on almost all skin types.
Salicylic acid comes in numerous doses and formulations. It is recommended to slowly incorporate any acid into your skincare regime, whether this is by using products containing 0.5% salicylic acid, and gradually increasing to 2% or higher, or by using a salicylic acid cleanser every other evening to assess if your skin can tolerate the acid.
Plus, there's the fact salicylic acid may come in the form of your moisturiser, and cleanser, so starting off with one before including the BHA in other beauty forms is also advised.
Of course, when using any acid your skin is more sensitive to sun, so ensure you wear SPF at all times.
We spoke to Skin Therapist and Ella & Jo Co-Founder, Niamh Ryan, to gain expert insight into incorporating salicylic acid into your skincare routine, as well as a deeper dive into salicylic acid cleansers.
What are salicylic acid cleansers?
Salicylic acid is one of the most common acids in skincare, otherwise known as a BHA.
'Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) that is great for improving the texture of the skin. If you suffer from acne, oily skin and/or clogged pores, a salicylic acid cleanser can be exactly what your skin needs', shared Niamh.
What are the benefits of salicylic acid and salicylic acid cleansers?
Salicylic acid has numerous skin benefits, though its primary benefit is to cleanse and exfoliate the skin, and ultimately combat blemishes or acne prone skin.
Niamh explained: 'Salicylic acid is known for its exfoliating properties. It penetrates the pores of the skin and helps to remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and other debris.
How does salicylic acid work?
Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning it's able to cut through oil and debris stuck in the pore lining.
'One of the key benefits of salicylic acid is its ability to unclog pores. It works by breaking down the bonds between skin cells, allowing for the removal of excess oil and preventing the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. This makes it a particularly effective daily treatment for individuals with acne-prone or oily skin. Due to its exfoliating benefits, it also helps improve skin texture and can contribute to a smoother, more even complexion.'
How often should you use salicylic acid?
If you are new to acids in your skincare routine it is recommended you ease your way into them with small doses, and monitor how your skin takes to the ingredient.
While it is important to take into consideration your personal reactions and experience with salicylic acid, Niamh has also advised reading the instructions on each product as some salicylic acid cleansers may be formulated in a specific way to be used differently to others.
Niamh explained: 'Follow the instructions provided by the specific salicylic acid cleanser you're using. Some cleansers may be formulated for daily use, while others may recommend less frequent application.'
Every individual is different and while some may find using a salicylic acid cleanser every evening is beneficial for them, others may only use around their period when hormonal breakouts may be more common.
'If you breakout at certain times within the month, or just in the key hormonal areas, I would advise using a product where you can target application, such as the Ella and Jo Clear Skin AHA & BHA Clarifying Liquid, to avoid drying out areas that do not need salicylic acid treatment', Niamh added.
Can I use a salicylic acid cleanser with retinol?
There are various beauty trends that involve layering your skincare products with a cocktail of other products, but that is not advised when it comes to active ingredients.
However, Niamh reassured us there are occasions where you can use salicylic acid cleanser with other potent ingredients, including with retinol. She shared: 'It is possible to use both within your skincare routine, however it is essential to introduce them gradually and pay attention to how your skin responds.
'Both salicylic acid and retinol can be potent ingredients that may cause skin sensitivity, especially when used together. If you are new to either of these ingredients, it's advisable to introduce them into your routine gradually and monitor how your skin responds. If you experience excessive irritation, you may want to use these products on alternate days or at different times of the day. Both Salicylic Acid and Retinol can potentially lead to dryness, so it is crucial to use a good moisturiser to help keep the skin hydrated. Additionally, both ingredients can increase sensitivity to the sun, so it's essential to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day.'
What to look for when shopping salicylic acid cleansers?
There is a wide range of salicylic acid cleansers to shop from well-respected brands, such as The Inkey List, Beauty Pie, La Roche Posay, Caudalie, CeraVe, and many more. Among those brands and products the dose of salicylic acid included may vary, or the product is infused with other ingredients, so it is vital to read the ingredients list before buying any skincare item.
Niamh advised: 'It’s important to check the concentration of the product. Products typically range from 0.5% to 2%.
'If you’re new to Salicylic Acid or have sensitive skin, you may want to start with a lower concentration and gradually increase if needed. It also super important to consider the overall formulation of the cleanser. Look for products that are suitable to your skin type i.e. if you have dry skin, look for a salicylic acid cleanser with added hydrating benefits. Some salicylic acid cleansers contain additional beneficial ingredients such as Vitamin B5 to calm and soothe the skin whilst helping retain the moisture barrier.'
Who should avoid using salicylic acid cleansers?
We have mentioned salicylic acid cleansers can be potent, and are not always suitable for everyone, though each individual is unique.
As Niamh explained: 'While salicylic acid is generally well tolerated, certain individuals with specific skin conditions may want to avoid. For example, individuals with known allergies or sensitives to salicylic acid should avoid. Salicylic acid is related to aspirin so if you have a known aspirin allergy you should also avoid such cleansers.
'While salicylic acid is generally considered safe in small concentrations, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals may want to consult with their healthcare provider before using salicylic acid products, especially at higher concentrations.'
The key piece of advice from Niamh is to 'to perform a patch test if you’re new to a salicylic acid product and it is advised to seek the advice of your doctor of dermatologist.'
