How many applicants get accepted off the waitlist depends on the school and varies widely, but some schools admit up to 50% of their class from the waitlist. Therefore, if you are on the waitlist at one or multiple medical schools, you may have a very good chance of getting an acceptance.

Average MCAT Scores and Average GPA for Med Schools

Most medical schools require candidates to have a 3.0 or higher GPA to even apply, and many require 3.5 or higher. But beyond the minimum requirements, each school gives its own particular weight to GPA and MCAT scores when reviewing applications.

Practically speaking, however, it is more difficult to get into an MD program vs. a DO program. During the 2023–2024 academic year, the average MCAT and GPA for students entering U.S. MD programs were 511.7 and 3.77, respectively.

If you have a low GPA, consider applying for a DO program instead of an MD program. The typical cutoff for DO programs is around a 3.4 GPA, while most MD programs require at least a 3.7 GPA. Another option is to consider attending a school that has a higher acceptance rate.
